A Guide for Victims of Domestic Violence

A Guide for Victims of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence – also known as domestic abuse or intimate partner violence – is a pattern of behaviour used to gain or maintain power and control over a partner in an intimate relationship. It can take many forms: physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, or financial. It can affect anyone, regardless of gender or background, and occur in any setting. For those living abroad, the experience can be even more isolating, with fewer familiar support systems to turn to.
A few years ago, our members Hans Lenders and Magdalena Kropiwnicka helped bring this topic to the table. Their early efforts led to the development of a first draft on how to support families affected by domestic abuse. Building on that foundation, a BeFamily Member-led Working Group has now completed a practical guide for victims of domestic violence tailored to the realities of life on diplomatic postings. Input from specialized NGOs and the dedicated support of the Family Officer played a vital role in shaping this new resource. The documents are available on Befamily website as well as the FO SharePoint.

The working group will continue working on this topic together with the Family Officer, and build tools to continue preventing domestic abuse and supporting victims. If you’d like to contribute to our working group, we would be delighted to have you on board. Please reach out to Eliane (eliane.dujardin@hotmail.com)
